Green Salon is a certification and concept that originated in Denmark and has spread to several other countries, including Sweden. Green Salon is about hairdressing salons and their products meeting strict environmental and health requirements. The aim of a Green Salon is to reduce the environmental impact of the hairdressing industry and create a healthier working environment for both hairdressers and customers.
For a salon to be certified as a Green Salon, it must meet the following requirements:
- Chemical-free environment: The salon should avoid hazardous chemicals commonly found in hair care products, such as ammonia, parabens, sulfates and other synthetic substances. All products used must be approved according to the certification criteria and be as natural and organic as possible.
- Sustainability: Salons must work towards sustainable development by using environmentally friendly products, reducing energy and water consumption and ensuring that their waste management is carried out in an environmentally friendly way. This can include recycling of packaging and proper management of chemical waste.
- Health and safety: In addition to the environmental impact, Green Salon also focuses on the working environment for hairdressers. This means that they are not exposed to harmful chemicals on a daily basis, reducing the risk of allergies and other health problems. The certification requires that the working environment is safe and healthy for both hairdressers and clients.
- Social responsibility: Green Salon certified businesses strive to be socially responsible, for example by using products that are not tested on animals and by supporting ethically produced ingredients.

Green Salon is of course something we at Gentlemen of Sweden do our best to comply with even though we are not a salon. This means that all our products comply with Green Salon’s strict requirements.
Firm Hold Paste did not previously meet the requirements of Green Salon. The reason was that the styling fibers used to create Firm Hold Paste contained 0.0000018% BHT. We no longer use those fibers, which means Firm Hold Paste too now meets the requirements of Green Salon.
BHT is short for Butylhydroxytoluene, which is a synthetic antioxidant used in cosmetic products and also food to prevent oils and fats from going rancid.
